Nicholas Hytner, 1996 (123 mins, Cert. 12)
Following his triumph with The
Madness of King George, director Nicholas Hytner has adapted Arthur
Miller's celebrated and controversial play about the seventeenth century Salem
witch trials. Starring Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Paul Scofield,
Hytner takes the story of a married farmer who has an affair with a village
woman and powerfully examines the rights of individual conscience in the face of
a community's sinister and overwhelming pressures.
