Larry & Andy Wachowski, 2003 (138 mins, Cert. 15)
The
first instalment of two planned sequels for what has become one of
the most influential and imitated action films in recent memory sees
all four stars of the original return to reprise their roles; Monica
Bellucci also joins the cast. Hugely
impressive and as daring and stylish as the original, the film concerns
Neo and the rebel leaders' discovery that they have only 72
hours until 250,000 probes discover Zion and destroy it and its inhabitants.
Thrillingly executed with audacious fight sequences and jaw dropping
special effects.

The
sequel feels more like a comic book and less science fictional than
the original but taken on those terms it's a lot of fun. The plot is
pure hogwash but every one of the sequence of set piece spactaculars
is highly impressive. Many of the fights (and, even more so, the party
in Zion) go on too long and Morpheus seems much reduced in authority
as Neo drives most of the action this time around. There's more humour
now and less sense of the machines' domination. Not the landmark
film that the original was but hugely enjoyable
all the same.
