Mike Figgis, 1999 (90 mins, Cert. 15)
Strindberg's classic exploration into
class war and sexual politics. Remaining true to its theatrical origins,
this three-hander depicts the tragic events as a young noblewoman remains
at home to celebrate midsummer's eve with the house's servants.

The tension in this film is unrelenting
as the struggle for dominance between the three characters swings back
and forth. Tightly focussed in a single set, the narrative grips
throughout and the whole has an almost theatrical power of involvement.
Although they experience many emotions in the course of the bright night,
the three characters remain clearly delineated and totally believeable.
This being predominately a verbal tussle, full of suspense, the few intrusions
of violent action have an even greater impact. This is strong meat, superbly
presented; not easy viewing but very rewarding.
