Lasse Hallstrom, 2001 (117 mins, Cert. 15)
Following
his wife's sudden death, newspaper jounalist Quoyle (Kevin Spacey), his young
daughter and his stern aunt (Judi Dench) reclaim their ancestral home in Newfoundland,
which has stood vacant for 40 years. The move to Canada proves to bve Quoyle's
salvation, and he gains confidence and pride daily from his work at the tiny
local newspaper, and through his friendship with Wavey (Julianne Moore).

According
to this film, Newfoundlanders are a strange lot, and Quoyle only gradually uncovers
the truth of his family past. With engaging, varied and very human characters
this is an involving and satisfying film. All is nicely resolved by the end
and we leave Quoyle finally settled and at home amongst his roots yet released
from his past.
