Happy Rhodes is an independent alternative singer/song-writer from upstate New York. I first heard about her music back in 1990 when it was discussed at length in the Usenet Kate Bush newsgroup rec.music.gaffa. Discussed at such length, indeed, that a mailing list was spawned early in 1991 to provide a dedicated corner of cyberspace for the increasing numbers of interested music-lovers. Thus was the Ecto mailing list (named after Happy's fourth album) born.
For a while in the early 1990s there was an IRC channel associated with the Ecto mailing list, called (unsurprisingly) #Ecto. During 1994 I spent a lot of time hanging out on #Ecto and used to offer to send a sampler tape to interested people who wandered into the channel in an attempt to spread the word about Happy's music. It was through this that I first got to know the woman who would become my wife, Lisa.
Happy made her recording debut in 1984 and released ten albums over a period of fifteen years:
Rhodes I (1984)
Rhodes II (1984)
Rearmament (1986)
Ecto (1987)
Warpaint (1991)
Equipoise (1993)
Rhodesongs (1993)
-- a compliation of previously-released songs (some in alternative versions) together with one new song, 'Summer', and a delightful cover of Bowie's 'Ashes to Ashes'
Building the Colossus (1994)
The Keep (1995)
-- for the most part, a compilation of alternative versions of previously-released songs
Many Worlds Are Born Tonight (1998)
